Anand Mahindra, the Chairperson of Mahindra and Mahindra, recently took to X (Formerly Twitter) to congratulate the Indian filmmakers that bagged major awards at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.
The billionaire posted pictures of Payal Kapadia’s ‘All We Image As Light’ and Konstantin Bojanov’s ‘The Shameless’. He captioned the tweet saying - “India in the limelight at #cannes2024. Intense Filmmakers . Intense actors. May their tribe flourish.”
The 77th Cannes Film Festival was a great one for Indian cinema. ‘All We Imagine As Light’ took home the Grand Prix award at the prestigious international film festival, while Chidananda S Naik's ‘Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know’ won the La Cinef for Best Short Film award and Anasuya Sengupta of ‘The Shameless’ won the Best Actress award at Cannes.
Sengupta made history by being the first Indian person to win the award in Un Certain Regard for her role in ‘The Shameless’. Kapadia made history too by being the first Indian filmmaker to win the Grand Prix award at Cannes.
“India is a country that makes a lot of good films. Not just Bollywood but every state has its industry and there are absolutely brilliant filmmakers. I hope that after this we won’t have to wait another 30 years. I’m excited and really we’re just happy that our film got selected. We didn’t expect it and it’s an honor because there are so many filmmakers in the section that I really admire,” Payal Kapadia said.
‘All We Imagine As Light’ drew in an 8 minute long standing ovation at the international film festival. It is also the first film in 30 years to compete in a major festival and first ever by an Indian woman.
‘All We Imagine As Light’ was in the running for the Palme d’Or but lost to Sean Baker’s ‘Anora’ starring Mikey Madison. Nonetheless, Kapadia’s debut feature film brought home the second highest award of the festival.
