In his apology, Morrone acknowledged that he had spoken out of turn and without sufficient knowledge of the situation.

He wrote, "I would like to publicly apologize to Imane Khelif for having posted a story writing that the match at the Olympics was not fair against the Italian Angela Carini. I was hasty in commenting without informing myself thoroughly. I also apologize to the Algerian people if they felt offended. I believe that as a human being you can make mistakes, but admitting them if you realize the mistake is more important than anything else."
