Matthew McConaughey’s latest co-star isn’t a Hollywood heavyweight — it’s his 17-year-old son, Levi. The Oscar winner is starring alongside his boy in The Lost Bus, a project that doubles as Levi’s big-screen debut. And if that wasn’t enough of a family affair, Matthew’s mother Mary has also joined the cast.

In the film, Matthew and Levi play — fittingly — father and son. For Levi, it was a nerve-wracking first job, but one made easier by the fact that he got to act opposite his dad. Matthew told Entertainment Tonight: “For his first job to be in the same scene with his dad and to play my son... I think it helped him have the courage to go, ‘Oh I can go there.’”

Levi agreed that the scenes weren’t easy, but working with his dad gave him confidence. “The scenes were intense. What made it good is that we have such a good relationship. That just made it easier to go in and kind of throw eggshells at the wall.”

And then there’s Mary, Matthew’s mother and Levi’s grandmother, who rounds out the cast by playing — naturally — their onscreen matriarch. For Levi, sharing a set with two generations of his family felt surreal. “How could you not [have fun]? It’s my grandma! It’s my dad! I love that guy.”
