When the peppy number Jinguchaa from Kamal Haasan’s upcoming gangster drama Thug Life was launched, fans were in for a surprise. As actress Sanya Malhotra joined Silambarasan in the high-octane wedding number, the internet was abuzz with curiosity. Most speculated she had a meaty role to essay in the Mani Ratnam-directed film, perhaps as Silambarasan’s love interest.
But ending all speculations, director Mani Ratnam has clarified that Sanya is playing a small and brief role in the movie.
“It’s a warm face,” says Mani Ratnam
The rumour was put to rest by Ratnam recently in an interview with Vikatan, wherein he said, “She stars in the film in a cameo role and only features in a song. It’s a friendly appearance. She’s an amazing dancer and a cool person.”
He added: “They also wanted a North Indian face as the Thug Life story partly happens in Delhi. So they need a North Indian face for North Indian flavour as I wanted to keep the regional authenticity. We wanted that Delhi flavour. That’s why we went with her,” he said.

Following on the heels of the song’s success, Sugar Baby -- the second single from the album just dropped this week, and it has been steadily climbing the charts on all fronts.

The film is helmed by Mani Ratnam, and it also stars Kamal Haasan in the main lead with Silambarasan, Trisha Krishnan, Abhirami and Ashok Selvan. Featuring an emotional gangster story, the film is produced by Kamal Haasan's Raaj Kamal Films International, Mani Ratnam's Madras Talkies and Udhayanidhi Stalin's Red Giant Movies.
Thug Life is scheduled for a massive release in theatres on 5th June.
