The recent brutal rape and murder of a trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital has sent shockwaves across the country, leaving citizens grappling with a deep sense of grief and anger.
In response to the tragedy, several Bollywood celebrities have taken to social media to express their outrage and call for immediate action against such heinous crimes.
Hrithik Roshan took to his X account, passionately emphasizing the need for evolution toward a safer society. He acknowledged that achieving safety for all might take generations but stressed that immediate justice demands harsh punishments that would act as a deterrent to future perpetrators. "Yes we need to evolve into a society where we ALL feel equally safe. But that is going to take decades. It's going to hopefully happen with sensitizing and empowering our sons and daughters. The next generations will be better." Hrithik stated, reflecting the widespread indignation against the continued violence against women.
He further added, "We will get there. Eventually. But what in the interim ? Right now justice would be to put a hard stop to such atrocities. And the only way to do that is a punishment so harsh that it scares the living daylights out of such perpetrators. That's what we need. Perhaps ? I stand with the victim's family in seeking justice for their daughter and I stand with all the Doctors that were attacked last night."
Priyanka Chopra, known for using her platform for advocacy, reposted a powerful image from a protest on her Instagram Stories. The image depicted a protester holding a sign asking, "Who will speak for her if you don't?" She accompanied the post with a sad emoji.
Twinkle Khanna expressed her sorrow on Instagram, noting how little had changed in terms of women’s safety over the past five decades. Reflecting on her own experiences, she lamented that she is now forced to teach her daughter the same safety precautions she learned as a child, she said "Fifty years on this planet, in this country, and I am teaching my daughter the same things I was taught as a child. Don't go alone – to the park, to school, to the beach."
Kriti Sanon took a similar stance, penning a heartfelt post about the stark contrast between India’s global progress and its failure to ensure basic safety for women. On Independence Day, instead of celebrating, Kriti shared her anguish, "While we celebrate our 78th year of Independence and feel proud on how far we've come as a country globally.. it breaks my heart to see the terrifying reality that women are still not Safe in their own country. There is absolutely no fear in the people who commit these inhumane acts. And even today, its the woman being blamed for being a victim!!!" She said.
Suhana Khan, via Instagram Stories, shared a post from her friend Navya Naveli Nanda. It highlighted the horror of the crime and called for a united effort to combat harmful mindsets that objectify women. The post stressed, "We deserve better. We will continue to fight for better. Because nothing and no one should ever be able to override the agency and dignity of women."
