Adapting to new technology has always had an effect on entertainment - be it from the time of black-and-white movies to now CGI characters. Now a first AI generated actress, Tilly Norwood, which has been developed from the Netherlands, has got many worried and angry at the same time.
Tilly is being introduced as a 'digital performer' who will appear in adverisments and also full-length feature films.
Dutch actor-producer Eline Van der Velden's London-based AI production studio Particle6 has created Tilly Norwood.
When she came along, a lot of people got into heated debates about creativity, ethics, and what it means to work with someone.
After backlash, its creators had also issued a statement which read that Tilly is not a replacement to Human actors. Read her statement here:
What makes Tilly Norwood important
Unlike CGI characters, who are completely controlled by animators, Tilly, the AI-generated actress, is supposed to feel like a real actor with her own personality.
You can programme her to play different roles, follow different scripts, and keep a good image on social media.
Her creators said she was a new kind of performer because she combined comedy, storytelling, and technology. It's clear why many studios will like and approve of it - because a digital actor won't need to sign contracts, make plans or for that matter take time off to refresh.
That person will never get old or need more money, clothes, or makeup. They can also be changed or modified according to the need of the hour or that particular project. So it will also save producers are a lot of wait time and eventually their money.
AI talent like Tilly offers streaming services speed and, most importantly, low cost at a time when they are looking for new content.
Hollywood actors are angry about it
But a lot of actors and directors in Hollywood are very upset about this. They believe that using AI instead of human artists makes the art form less important.
A lot of people say that acting is more than just learning lines. They say it's about using emotions, gut feelings, and personal experiences that computers can't copy.
Many well-known actors have spoken out against the rise of AI actors, saying that it could hurt job prospects and make movies less real.
The rise of a digital actor has made people even more worried after the strikes in Hollywood last year, when AI was a big issue.
A lot of people think that Tilly is the same thing they were fighting against: the idea that hard work and creativity can be replaced by cheaper, faster options.
Recently Moneycontrol also spoke with National Award winner Harikrishnan S, and asked him that in today’s era of AI-generated voices, what does he feel makes a human narration timeless and irreplaceable?
He also told us: 'A human narration is timeless because it carries lived emotion, it would have subtle imperfections; like, I'd say, to convey an emotion, you can gasp, you can deliberately bring subtle subtle imperfections and intentional choices. Those are the qualities that no AI can truly replicate. These nuances would forge an authentic human connection which should make the innovation resonate way longer after words are spoken.'
AI creators and performers are not likely to disappear or fade away.
AI performers have just begun and they are unlikely to go away somewhere soon. Even though some people don't like them. Experts in the field think that AI actors and real people will one day live together.
Digital actors could be used for stunts, dubbing, or fantasy figures, but real actors are still the best way to tell an emotional story.
