Popular rapper Wiz Khalifa, whose real name is Cameron Jibril Thomaz, was recently sentenced to nine months in prison in Romania. This came after the rapper was arrested and charged with illegal drug possession.
According to People, rapper Wiz Khalifa was accused of possessing and consuming over 18 grams of cannabis while performing during the 'Beach, Please!' festival in Costinesti, Romania, in July 2024.
The court claimed that Wiz Khalifa "represents ostentatious conduct that significantly amplifies the social danger of the offence" and clarified that the sentence was intended to serve as an example.
They called it an "ostentatious act", and noted that the rapper was "a music performer, on the stage of a music festival well known among young people" who "possessed and consumed, in front of a large audience predominantly made up of very young people, an artisanal cigarette".
Soon after the performance, Wiz took to his X (formerly Twitter) and addressed the situation and admitted that he didn't mean to disrespect by smoking marijuana onstage.
He tweeted, "Last night's show was amazing. I didn't mean any disrespect to the country of Romania by lighting up on stage. They were very respectful and let me go. I'll be back soon. But without a big ass joint next time.”
The rapper was earlier fined USD 830 for "illegal possession of dangerous drugs" by a lower court in Constanta County in April 2025. The prosecution then challenged the ruling and sought a heavier punishment. It is unclear if Romanian authorities will pursue Wiz Khalifa's extradition, given that he is a citizen of the United States.
