During a recent live performance in Mumbai, Himesh Reshammiya chose to directly address the long-running controversy surrounding his unique singing style.
In addition to providing entertainment, the singer-composer, who is well-known for his distinctive voice and string of early 2000s hits, used his concert stage to address years of online criticism and public discussion regarding his vocal delivery.
In a video from the event, Reshammiya interacts with an enthusiastic crowd after performing a few lines from his hit song Aashiq Banaya Aapne. Turning to his audience, he asked playfully, “Thoda regular gau yaa naak se?” (Should I sing in a regular style or nasally?), drawing cheers and laughs from fans.
“I always thought I was doing high-pitch singing,” he remarked, clarifying his perspective on a vocal technique that has often been described by critics as "nasal." He went on to boldly claim his place in Bollywood music history, stating, “I had been the one to introduce nasal singing to the Bollywood music scene.”
Adding that the topic of his nasal tone rarely comes up anymore, he noted the influence he’s had on others: “Aaj toh nasal ki baat bhi nahi kar rahe hain (Nobody is even talking about my nasal singing these days). Many people did nasal singing after me. So many of my songs became hits.”
Himesh, whose tracks like Tera Suroor, Jhalak Dikhlaja, and Aashiq Banaya Aapne once dominated airwaves, has long been a polarising figure. His voice, widely recognisable for its sharp tonal quality, sparked memes and parody — but also a loyal fan base.
Addressing actor Janhvi Kapoor’s recent remarks on Koffee With Karan, where she took a light-hearted dig at his older Instagram videos, Reshammiya responded in good humour. “It's a good thing. It has been so many years, but the likeability of ‘Tandoori Nights’ remains. We have millions of views — the word ‘tandoori’ is very lucky for me,” he said.
Himesh appears unaffected by criticism as he embarks on his CapMania concert tour and promotes his film Badass Ravikumar. Instead, he embraces his individuality, which has kept him relevant for decades.
