Filmmaker A.R. Murugadoss has hinted at the possibility of a sequel to Ghajini, the blockbuster that made a significant impact in both Bollywood and Tamil cinema. The original Ghajini, released in 2005, starred Suriya and was a massive success in the South.
Its Hindi adaptation, featuring Aamir Khan in the lead role, took the story to a nationwide audience in 2008 and became a record-breaking hit. With both versions earning critical and commercial acclaim, Murugadoss’ statement has sparked excitement among fans eager to see how the story could continue.
Last month, Ghajini producer Allu Aravind expressed his keen interest in making a sequel with Aamir Khan in the lead once again. Addressing the possibility, filmmaker A.R. Murugadoss told PTI that discussions are underway for Ghajini 2. “We do have something in mind and will sit down to discuss it further. If everything aligns, we can move forward with the project. Right now, I have a basic concept, but not a full script. If the film is made, it will be in both Tamil and Hindi,” he shared.
The original Ghajini revolved around Sanjay, a businessman afflicted with anterograde amnesia, who embarks on an unyielding mission to avenge the brutal murder of his fiancée, Kalpana. The role of Kalpana was played by actress Asin in both the Tamil and Hindi versions of the film.
Renowned for delivering box-office hits like Darbar, Thuppakki, Kaththi, and Spyder, filmmaker A.R. Murugadoss highlighted the rising popularity of sequels and prequels in cinema. He noted that such continuations bring fresh perspectives to well-loved stories, keeping audiences engaged with their favorite characters and narratives.
“In Hollywood, even if a character dies, they find ways to bring them back,” he noted, hinting at creative possibilities for Ghajini 2. Besides, there’s always a possibility of a prequel. In ‘Ghajini’, we built a character, who has memory loss and is a super-rich guy. So, we can play with that. It’s an interesting character,” he added.
