Vada Chennai 2, the eagerly awaited follow-up to the cult Tamil hit Vada Chennai, has generated unexpected buzz. After actor Dhanush confirmed that the sequel might be released next year, the initial excitement turned into a contentious issue involving copyright claims and casting confusion.
Rs 20 crore: A big rumour
The actor allegedly demanded Rs 20 crore from director Vetrimaaran for the sequel's copyright, according to reports that surfaced online shortly after Dhanush shared the update at a film festival. Fans and industry insiders questioned the rift between one of Tamil cinema's most renowned actor-director pairs as the rumour swiftly gained traction on social media.
Confusion was increased when Vetrimaaran released a teaser for his upcoming movie, which also features Silambarasan TR (Simbu) and is set in the gritty North Chennai. Many began to question whether Simbu was taking Dhanush's place in the Vada Chennai sequel or if the project was being completely reimagined as a result.
Vetrimaaran Speaks Up and Disavows Conflict
Vetrimaaran broke his silence amid the rumours and vehemently denied having a financial dispute or a rift with Dhanush. He explained to the media that his film with Simbu is not Vada Chennai 2 but rather a stand-alone production set in a comparable setting.
The director reiterated his admiration for the partnership by saying, "I will speak to Dhanush and take proper permission if the tone or characters overlap with Vada Chennai."
He clarified the copyright rumour, saying, "Dhanush never asked for money." He actually said to me, "We'll give you a no-objection certificate if you do what you believe is right."
Rumours took a toll on emotions
Vetrimaaran acknowledged that he has been emotionally impacted by the rumours. "These things hurt," he admitted, particularly considering his long-standing relationship and mutual admiration for Dhanush. Known for their gritty realism and compelling storytelling, the pair has previously produced critically acclaimed and commercially successful films like Asuran, Vada Chennai, Aadukalam, and Polladhavan.
