Crowds gathered outside the Vile Parle crematorium on Monday afternoon as fans, admirers and onlookers waited to catch a final glimpse of Dharmendra, whose death earlier in the day brought an emotional wave across Mumbai. Among the many who arrived to pay their respects, a visibly distraught elderly woman, seen crying inconsolably near the barricades, became a striking reminder of the bond the late actor shared with his audience. She was comforted by people around her as police tried to manage the swelling crowd.

Several fans had travelled from different parts of the city after learning of the veteran actor’s demise. Many carried old photographs, posters and magazine clippings, some preserved for decades. For a generation that grew up watching Dharmendra through the 60s, 70s and 80s, his passing felt deeply personal. People at the spot repeatedly described him as “family”, a word heard again and again as they waited outside the premises.

The police had tightened security around the crematorium due to the large turnout, guiding fans to maintain space for the family’s arrival. Despite the arrangements, emotions overflowed. The woman whose video is circulating online was seen wiping her tears as officers attempted to calm her, while others folded their hands as Dharmendra’s body was taken inside for the final rites.

Some recalled meeting him briefly at public events, describing him as warm, humble and approachable.
