Bollywood and South Indian film star Rashmika Mandanna has once again found herself in the center of a political storm, this time due to remarks made by Karnataka Congress MLA Ravi Ganiga. The controversy erupted after the legislator accused Rashmika Mandanna of disrespecting the Kannada film industry by refusing to attend a local film event, prompting the Codava National Council (CNC) to request security for the actress.
The situation has triggered widespread debate over regional loyalty, celebrity autonomy, and the intersection of politics and the entertainment industry.
The Controversy: What Led to the Security Demand?
The Codava National Council (CNC), a group advocating for the rights of Karnataka’s Kodava (Coorg) community, recently petitioned the Karnataka and Union Home Ministries to provide security for Rashmika Mandanna. According to the CNC, the actress has been unfairly targeted following Congress MLA Ravi Ganiga’s remarks, which many interpreted as an incitement against her.
Rashmika, a native of the Kodagu region, began her acting career in the Kannada film industry with the 2016 film Kirik Party. However, in recent years, she has shifted her focus to Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi cinema, which has led to accusations that she has distanced herself from her Kannada roots.
The controversy ignited when Ganiga, who represents the Mandya constituency, criticized Rsshmika for allegedly ignoring invitations to Kannada film industry events, including the Bengaluru International Film Festival.
Ganiga claimed, “Despite multiple invitations, she refused to attend the event, stating that she had no time and that her home was in Hyderabad.” He went further, accusing Mandanna of disregarding Karnataka and the Kannada language, despite the state being the foundation of her career. His most contentious remark, however, came when he suggested consequences for her actions: “Shouldn’t we teach her a lesson?”
The MLA’s comments sparked outrage, particularly among the Kodava community, which sees Mandanna as a representative of their culture and heritage. CNC President Nandinervanda Nachappa swiftly responded by condemning Ganiga’s remarks, stating that the actress was being unnecessarily dragged into political debates and subjected to mental harassment.
In a formal complaint, Nachappa asserted, “A phobia is being created against the actor, dragging her into unnecessary political debates and subjecting her to mental harassment. Her success is independent of political influence and should not be used to further political agendas.”
The CNC has maintained that Mandanna is being unfairly vilified simply because she has expanded her career beyond the Kannada industry. According to the organization, the backlash against her is not just an attack on an individual but also an attempt to marginalize the Kodava community. “She is being targeted because of her Kodava heritage,” Nachappa added.
Despite the growing criticism, MLA Ganiga has refused to back down. Dismissing the CNC’s concerns, he asserted that the organization’s president had “lost credibility.”Defending his remarks, he stated, “Our land, water, and culture are more important than individual interests. Rashmika was invited to the Kannada film festival, and on many occasions, she has insulted Kannada and Karnataka. I condemn that as well. Let Rashmika say she stands for Karnataka, and we will have no objection.”
