BTS' SUGA drunk driving case: No military punishment imposed, clarifies MMA

BTS member SUGA was involved in a drunk driving incident on the night of August 6, 2024, raising concerns about potential repercussions on his mandatory military service. However, the Military Manpower Association has clarified that SUGA will not face any additional military penalties due to the incident occurring during off-hours.

According to a statement by a Military Manpower Association official, as reported by South Korean media outlet Xports News, SUGA's social service period will not be extended as a result of the incident. The official emphasized that social service agents are held responsible for such acts only if they occur during working hours. Since SUGA was involved in the DUI incident outside of his official duties, "no special punishment" will be given to the BTS rapper.

The incident occurred when SUGA, while driving an electric scooter under the influence of alcohol, fell near his home after returning from a dinner. A police officer at the scene detected alcohol on SUGA's breath and administered a breathalyzer test, which confirmed that he was drunk. As a result, SUGA received a fine and had his driver's license revoked.

In response, SUGA issued a heartfelt apology on Weverse on August 7, expressing his deep regret for disappointing his fans and admirers. He acknowledged that, even though there were no victims or damage to public property, he takes full responsibility for his actions without any excuses. SUGA sincerely apologised to everyone affected by his "careless and wrong actions" and assured his fans that he would be more cautious in the future to prevent such incidents from happening again.
