Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, once a background figure in Assam’s music circle, has suddenly become a central name in one of the state’s biggest controversies in recent times.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Assam police has detained him for questioning in connection with the mysterious death of singer Zubeen Garg.
According to PTI, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami was aboard the same yacht in Singapore when noted singer Zubeen Garg died under mysterious circumstances.
Zubeen Garg passed away on September 19, 2025, reportedly during a scuba-diving episode while on a yacht outing. He was in Singapore to participate in the Northeast India Festival.His body was later brought back to Assam, where a second autopsy was conducted on the day of his cremation.
The SIT also simultaneously carried out raids at the homes of other key figures, including Zubeen’s manager Siddhartha Sharma and festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, both of whom are under scrutiny by investigators.
During the raid at Siddhartha Sharma’s residence, protesters gathered and clashed with police, with authorities detaining a couple of people allegedly instigating disturbances.

He was a longtime bandmate of Zubeen Garg. His social media profiles label him as a sound engineer, music producer, arranger, musician, and even computer hardware engineer.
At the time of detainment, authorities have not publicly detailed the precise accusations or whether formal charges will be filed.
The Assam government has formed a 10-member SIT under CID Special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta to dig deeper into Zubeen Garg’s death, promising a thorough probe.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has cautioned that if the SIT’s findings prove unsatisfactory, the case could be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
He has also urged the public against spreading rumours and appealed for patience, insisting the investigation must follow legal norms.
