Director Shashank Khaitan’s latest family entertainer Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari, featuring Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor, opened at the box office with Rs 9.25 crore nett on its first day. Produced by Dharma Productions, the romantic comedy was released on October 2, but its start was considered modest given the scale of its release and the star power attached.
The film faced a tough clash with Rishab Shetty’s Kantara Chapter 1, which has already created a storm at the Indian box office.
The Kannada language prequel recorded a massive pan-India opening of over Rs 60 crore nett, setting a high benchmark and drawing audiences away from new Bollywood releases.
According to Sacnilk, Sunny Sanskari Ki Tulsi Kumari registered an overall occupancy of 32.45 percent on Day 1, with evening shows contributing significantly to the footfalls.
Regional trends revealed distinct variations: Chennai topped the charts with 58 percent occupancy, followed by Bengaluru at 51.33 percent and Kolkata at 45.67 percent.
Mumbai, NCR, and Hyderabad registered steady collections, while markets like Surat, Bhopal, and Ahmedabad witnessed comparatively lower turnout. Afternoon and evening shows performed the best across most markets, with Chennai standing out despite limited screenings.

The film’s star cast includes Varun Dhawan, Janhvi Kapoor, Sanya Malhotra, and Rohit Saraf. With glossy production values, chart-friendly music, and rom-com elements, the movie is targeted at family audiences and young urban viewers. However, sustaining its run will depend heavily on word of mouth and how well it can hold against the juggernaut of Kantara Chapter 1.
Industry watchers note that while an opening of Rs 9.25 crore is respectable, the film will need to show strong growth over the weekend to maintain momentum. With the festive season ahead, there is still room for recovery if it manages to connect with audiences emotionally and deliver consistent occupancy across markets.
