Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has finally broken his silence on long-standing rumours that he and Urmila Matondkar were more than just creative collaborators. In a recent chat with Zoom, Varma said that while he considers Urmila Matondkar “the most versatile actress,” the speculation about a romantic link between them is “how the system and social media work.”

Over the years, RGV and Urmila teamed up on several landmark films, including Rangeela, Daud, Satya, and Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya, and their professional rapport fueled much of the buzz and admiration. In his interview, Varma said, “I think she is the most versatile actress, that is why I have worked with her in so many movies. I have worked with Amitabh Bachchan more, but nobody talks about it,” highlighting that their frequent collaborations did not necessarily stem from anything more than creative alignment.

RGV addressed the rumours candidly, remarking that the gossip is largely a creation of industry dynamics and the propensity for sensational stories. He urged the public to focus on Urmila Matondkar’s talent and body of work rather than the unverified narratives surrounding their personal lives.

During the peak of their collaboration, rumours about Ram Gopal Varma’s alleged closeness to Urmila Matondkar began gaining traction, with some reports even suggesting that the speculation created tension between him and his then-wife, Ratna Varma. In his book Guns & Thighs: The Story of My Life, Varma devoted an entire chapter to Matondkar under “Women in My Life,” where he admitted being captivated by her beauty, a key reason he envisioned Rangeela with her in the lead. The iconic film returned to the big screen in a restored 4K HD version on November 28, 2025, rekindling nostalgia around their celebrated creative partnership.
