Big changes are underway for this year’s famous Lav Kush Ramlila at the Red Fort in New Delhi. Fans who were expecting actress Poonam Pandey to play Mandodari will have to adjust, as the role has now been handed over to Major Shalu Verma—a decision that’s sparking plenty of excitement.
Committee President Arjun Kumar and General Secretary Subhash Goyal shared that although Poonam had initially agreed to take on the role, her casting met with objections from various groups once it was announced.
The committee felt that these concerns could get in the way of the event’s main goal: spreading the timeless message of Lord Shri Ram to society.
After much discussion, the committee unanimously decided to cast Major Shalu Verma as Mandodari instead. Arjun Kumar explained the reasoning behind this choice, saying, “This year, our Ramlila is also themed around ‘Operation Sindoor’.
Hence, we took the decision to assign key roles to members of the armed forces. Major Shalu Verma will play Mandodari, and in addition, four to five other defence personnel will also feature in significant roles.”
This is a first for the Ramlila—bringing armed forces personnel into such prominent parts—and it’s been warmly welcomed by both the committee and the public. People see it as a meaningful way to honour the country’s defenders while breathing new life into the traditional play.
