For Indian cinema, it's a proud moment as with their Netflix project Amar Singh Chamkila, Diljit Dosanjh and filmmaker Imtiaz Ali have garnered international attention and received nominations for the 2025 International Emmy Awards.
In addition to ecstatic fans, the recognition has brought attention to how Indian regional stories are establishing themselves globally.
The film itself has been nominated in the Best TV Movie/Mini-Series slot, and Diljit has been nominated in the Best Performance by an Actor category for playing the role of the late Punjabi music icon.
This acknowledgement feels very personal to the actor. He shared the news on Instagram Stories, writing, "It's all because of Imtiaz Ali sir."
Imtiaz, equally moved, posted in response: “Making us proud, Diljit Dosanjh. So well deserved.” Later, in a video message to NDTV, the director added, “Lot of messages have already come. Lot of people have congratulated me. So it means it’s a really big deal. I would like to congratulate the team of Chamkila, all those people of Punjab that contributed to this film, because it’s very much a film of that land… Diljit Dosanjh twice over. Thank you very much.”
Their co-star Parineeti Chopra, who transformed herself to play Chamkila’s wife Amarjot, was just as excited. Sharing the announcement on Instagram, she wrote: “Woohooo proud of my Team Chamkila!”
Amar Singh Chamkila, which premiered on Netflix on 12 April 2024, tells the poignant story of a boy from a Dalit Sikh family in Punjab who swapped factory work for the stage. Chamkila captivated the public's attention with songs that boldly expressed love and rebellion, but they also caused controversy. When he and Amarjot were shot dead at the age of 27, his incredible ascent came to an abrupt end.

Diljit’s portrayal of Chamkila has been praised for its raw energy and honesty, while Imtiaz’s direction has been hailed for keeping the story deeply rooted in the soil of Punjab.
Competing against David Mitchell, Oriol Pla and Diego Vasquez, Diljit’s nomination makes this one of the most exciting categories of the year.
