After delivering iconic films like 3 Idiots and PK, the celebrated actor-director duo Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani are all set to reunite for another cinematic journey — this time, with a biopic on the father of Indian cinema, Dadasaheb Phalke. The film, which has been in the works for some time, will go on floors in October 2025 and is now eyeing a grand release during Christmas 2026.
Aamir Khan will play the lead role, portraying the legendary filmmaker Dadasaheb Phalke, who made India’s first full-length feature film, Raja Harishchandra, in 1913.
According to reports in Pinkvilla, a source said: “Be it 3 Idiots or PK, Aamir Khan and Rajkumar Hirani films have always set new benchmarks at the box office during the Christmas weekend. The duo intends to continue that tradition, releasing their next film during the extended holiday season. Filming will begin in October 2025 and continue until April 2026, followed by a detailed post-production phase.”
The prep work for the ambitious film has already begun. The team is committed to recreating the era of the late 1800s and early 1900s with historical and visual accuracy.
“The idea is to recreate the era from the 1800s and 1900s with perfection. The pre-visualization has already started. Multiple looks are being designed for Aamir Khan, who, being a perfectionist, will also undergo acting workshops to get into the skin of Dadasaheb Phalke,” the source added.
The screenplay has been crafted by Abhijat Joshi, along with Hindukush Bharadwaj and Avishkar Bharadwaj. Staying true to Hirani’s storytelling style, the film will include emotional depth and a thread of humour, blending drama with relatability. The script has been under development for over three years, showing the team’s dedication to the subject.
To ensure world-class visuals, VFX and pre-visualization work is being handled by top studios based in Los Angeles.
Meanwhile, Aamir Khan is also gearing up for the release of Sitaare Zameen Par, which hits theatres on June 20, 2025. With the Dadasaheb Phalke biopic slated for Christmas 2026, fans can expect another memorable performance from the superstar and a heartfelt tribute to the pioneer of Indian cinema.
