Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has stayed away from holding press conferences, on Thursday explained why he took such a decision. In an interaction, the Prime Minister said that media today is not what it used to be earlier.
"I am answerable to the Parliament. Today, journalists are identified with their own preferences. Media is no longer a non-partisan entity," the Prime Minister said in an exclusive conversation with Aaj Tak when asked why he doesn't hold press conferences and gives fewer interviews now as compared to when he was the Gujarat chief minister.
The BJP leader further stated that he has never refused to do interviews and underlined the evolving media landscape as well the presence of multiple communication channels today.
"Earlier, media used to be faceless... who is writing in the media, what is the ideology... nobody was bothered about it. However, the situation is not the same any more," the Prime Minister said.
He said his belief centres around working hard and supporting those in need. "I can also cut ribbons and get my photo taken in Vigyan Bhawan. I don't do that. I go to a small district of Jharkhand and work towards a small scheme," said Modi during the interaction.
The BJP candidate from Varanasi also pointed that while there used to be only one source of communication earlier, that has changed today with the presence of new mediums of communication. Today, if you want to talk to the public, communication is two-way, the Prime Minister said.
Modi added that people today can also make their voice known without the media. The person who has to answer can express his views well without the media, he stated.
