The Congress lodged a complaint with the Election Commission (EC) against Union Minister and BJP leader Anurag Thakur for his remarks during an election rally, stating that they were "outrageous" and violated the Model Code of Conduct (MCC).
Jairam Ramesh, the party's general secretary, accused Thakur of violating standards of decency and truth. The Congress has demanded swift and significant action against him and warned of publicly identifying and condemning the offenders if action was not taken promptly.
Taking to microblogging site X, Ramesh wrote, "Today, Anurag Thakur followed in the footsteps of the PM and the UP Chief Minister and made a most outrageous speech that violates all standards of decency and truth, apart from the EC's Model Code of Conduct itself".
"The ECI must realise that a lack of meaningful action emboldens these bad faith actions. And if they do not take action then we will name and shame these offenders who think they are above the law, both in the arena of the public as well as before the courts" he further wrote.
Information and Broadcasting Minister Thakur, on April 27, asserted that the Congress manifesto bears the influence of foreign powers, alleging that it aims to transfer the property of citizens' children to Muslims.
Speaking at an election rally in Himachal Pradesh's Hamirpur, Thakur slammed the Congress for allegedly seeking to divide the nation along religious and regional lines, suggesting that the party's ideology has been influenced by the "tukde tukde" gang.
"The tukde tukde gang has taken over the mindset of the Congress and it is for the public to decide that they want to support the forces dividing the country or uniting the country," Thakur had said.
