As the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination (CSE) Mains examination draws near with only one month remaining, aspirants are faced with the critical task of refining their preparation strategy to maximise their chances of success.
The UPSC CSE Mains exam is set to be conducted from September 20 to 29, 2024. The examination will be held in two shifts daily: the morning session from 9 AM to 12 noon and the afternoon session from 2:30 PM to 5:30 PM. Candidates who successfully cleared the UPSC CSE Prelims 2024, the results of which were declared on July 1, 2024, are eligible to appear for the Mains exam. A total of 14,627 candidates qualified the preliminary stage.
The current phase is crucial, as it requires a focused approach to consolidate knowledge, practice effectively, and optimize performance. Nevertheless, experts have suggested a comprehensive guide on how to prepare efficiently and avoid common pitfalls during this final stretch.
Revise strategically
Focus on revising key concepts, core topics, and your own notes. Create a revision schedule that allocates specific days to different subjects and stick to it. Prioritize topics that are frequently covered in exams and are part of your strong suits. Use summary notes and mind maps to refresh your memory quickly.
“Additionally, taking full-length mock tests under simulated exam conditions is beneficial for getting accustomed to the exam environment, and analyzing these tests helps identify and rectify mistakes. Maintaining a balance between preparation, revision, and practice is key to making the most of the remaining time,” said Ravi Kapoor, Former IRS officer and UPSC mentor.
Practice answer writing
The Mains exam emphasizes answer writing skills. Devote time daily to practice writing answers. Use previous years' question papers and mock tests to simulate exam conditions. Focus on structuring answers clearly, developing arguments, and adhering to word limits.
Further, you are suggested to regularly take mock tests to assess preparation and adjust your strategy accordingly. Analyze your performance to identify weak areas and work on them. Mock tests also help in managing time effectively, which is crucial during the actual exam.
Avoid last-minute changes
Resist the urge to dive into new topics or change your study materials at this stage. Stick to what you’ve already studied and refine it.
Experts have highlighted that excessive studying without breaks can lead to burnout. Ensure you have a balanced routine with time for relaxation and recreation.
To be sure, you need not neglect Papers 2 and 3. While focusing on your strengths, don’t neglect Paper 2 (Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice) and Paper 3 (Technology, Economic Development, Environment). These papers are critical and need adequate attention.
“Avoid burnout by taking regular breaks and maintaining a healthy routine. Don't rely solely on last-minute preparations; consistent effort is key for success,” said Arpita Sharma, Chief Educator at SuperKalam.
