School holidays have been announced in Tamil Nadu and Telangana for the upcoming festive occasions of Pongal and Makar Sankranti. Several states in India have also begun declaring holidays for Makar Sankranti, with the duration of holidays varying from state to state. While schools in some regions will observe a four-day holiday, others will enjoy a break of up to five days. Northern states are set to benefit from a long weekend due to the alignment of the second Saturday and Sunday, while southern states like Tamil Nadu and Telangana are offering extended breaks of up to a week.
School Holiday in Telangana
The Telangana Board of Intermediate Education (BIE) has announced holidays for Intermediate colleges across the state on account of Makar Sankranti. The holiday period will begin on Saturday, 11 January, and continue until Thursday, 16 January. Classes will resume on Friday, 17 January.
The announcement covers all junior colleges, including government, private, aided, unaided, residential, social welfare, tribal welfare, model schools, BC welfare institutions, Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas, and composite degree colleges offering the two-year Intermediate course.
School Holiday in Tamil Nadu
The Tamil Nadu government has declared a five-day holiday for schools on the occasion of Pongal, a major harvest festival widely celebrated by Tamils. Pongal signifies the end of the winter solstice and the arrival of spring, holding cultural and agricultural significance in Tamil society.
In Tamil Nadu, schools, colleges, and government offices will remain closed from 14 January to 17 January. The declaration ensures that students and teachers alike can partake in the celebrations and traditions associated with the festival.
