Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Monday launched a new, high-tech CCTV surveillance system with an Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) for the Vaishno Devi shrine in the Trikuta hills. This system uses advanced technology to improve security, manage crowds, and ensure a smooth experience for pilgrims.
Speaking at the launch, LG Sinha said that the new system will help with real-time monitoring and fast response during emergencies. It aims to make the pilgrimage safer and more organised using modern tools like artificial intelligence (AI). The system includes smart features such as gesture recognition, automatic number plate recognition (ANPR), facial recognition, intrusion detection, and crowd control tools.
Under the project, One Integrated Command & Control Centre (ICCC) located at Katra and 7 Sub-Control Centres along the pilgrimage track for localised monitoring and coordination have been established. These centres will help monitor and manage the entire area 24/7, especially during times of heavy footfall or in case of emergencies like medical issues or security concerns, according to a report by The Tribune.
Over 700 cameras have been deployed across the shrine area, including 170 new high-definition IP cameras and integration of more than 500 existing cameras, covering all critical and vulnerable locations including entry/exit points, gathering areas, and the pilgrimage track.
Anshul Garg, CEO of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board, presented the command and control centre’s technical features and anticipated benefits for daily shrine operations. He highlighted that the centre can generate automated alerts for crowd congestion, route blockages, landslides, or emergencies, facilitating swift decision-making.
The LG also spoke with the engineers and staff managing the centre. He stressed the importance of regular staff training and close coordination with security agencies to make the most of the new system.
Notably, the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board had recently equipped the security agencies managing the yatra with advanced security tools. These include X-ray baggage scanners, door frame metal detectors, hand-held metal detectors, and under-vehicle search mirrors. This follows a joint security review conducted last year as per the directions of the Lieutenant Governor.
