Sonam Raghuwanshi, the prime accused in her husband Raja Raghuvanshi’s murder during their honeymoon in Meghalaya, has completed her one month in Shillong jail. But even after all this time, Sonam has shown no regret for her action, NDTV reported.
Adding to her isolation, not a single family member has visited or contacted her since her arrest. According to the NDTV report, Sonam has quietly adjusted to prison life.
Jail sources told NDTV that she has been following the prison schedule diligently. She wakes up at the same time every morning, abides by all jail rules, and has managed to blend in with other inmates.
Notably, she has not opened up to anyone, neither fellow prisoners nor jail officials, about her personal life or the murder that brought her here.
Currently, she is staying in a cell near the jail warden’s office, sharing the space with two other under-trial women inmates. Though she hasn’t been assigned any specific prison duties yet, authorities plan to engage her in skill-building activities like sewing in the coming days. She also has access to a television for a few hours daily, the report said.
There are 496 prisoners in Shillong jail, out of which only 20 are women. Sonam is the second woman inmate there who is facing murder charges. Jail authorities are keeping a close watch on her via CCTV surveillance.
Sonam was arrested following the shocking honeymoon murder case that gripped headlines. She and Raja were married on May 11 and had set out for their honeymoon to Meghalaya on May 20 with a one-way ticket. Three days later, they went missing. Raja’s body was eventually found in a gorge on June 2. Days later, on June 7, Sonam was found unconscious at a roadside eatery in Ghazipur. After being taken to the local hospital, she surrendered. Police later arrested her lover Raj and two other accomplices.
Following her confession, Sonam’s own family disowned her. Her brother publicly announced that they had severed all ties with her and extended support to Raja’s grieving family, vowing to help them seek justice.
