The severe weather is being driven by a well-marked low-pressure area over the southeast Arabian Sea, which the IMD forecasts will intensify into a depression within the next 24 hours. A separate low-pressure area is also likely to form over the southeast Bay of Bengal, creating a complex system influencing the region's weather.

Under the influence of these systems, the IMD has predicted widespread rainfall activity with heavy (7–11 cm in 24 hours) to very heavy rainfall (12–20 cm in 24 hours) at one or two places in Kerala between October 22 and 24. Isolated heavy rainfall is also likely on October 21, 25 and 26. and also over Lakshadweep between October 20 and 22.
