The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Mumbai is preparing to broaden its presence in Maharashtra with plans to open two new centres in Navi Mumbai and Pune. Designed to meet the changing needs of the job market, these centres will focus on specialised, industry-oriented programmes.
IIM Mumbai Director Professor Manoj K. Tiwari was quoted by The Indian Express as saying that the proposal has already been submitted to the state government.
The Navi Mumbai centre will concentrate on finance-focused programmes developed in collaboration with industry partners, with the goal of establishing it as a hub for financial education. In Pune, the centre will introduce management courses tailored to the needs of the manufacturing sector, aligning with the region’s growing industrial base.
“These centres will focus on offering new-age specialised courses such as cybersecurity in fintech and computational finance. With newer fields emerging, there is an urgent need for skill development in areas such as healthcare management, legal and regulatory compliance, cybersecurity, and trust management. Initially, we will launch short-term courses and gradually transition into long-term programmes,” said professor Tiwari on the sidelines of the second convocation ceremony of the institute, where a total of 932 students graduated from the post-graduate programme, covering two academic batches: 2022–24 and 2023–25.
Chairperson of IIM Mumbai Shashi Kiran Shetty, who also the is founder and chairperson of Allcargo Group, further added that the new centres are part of a broader plan to strengthen ties with local industries by expanding academic expertise available with the IIM Mumbai.
According to the report, IIM Mumbai, formerly known as NITIE, celebrated its second convocation since it received the IIM status in 2023. Dr. P. K. Mishra, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister of India, served as the chief guest for the event. Apart from talking about ever-evolving technology-led transformation of the world, Dr. Mishra in his address to the students emphasized that the graduating students play an important role in India’s vision 2047.
On the sidelines of the event, responding to the media’s query on whether the government is telling Indians working overseas to return to the country, Mishra was quoted by The Indian Express as saying: “We have been encouraging them and also it is part of our Capacity Building Commissions.”
