Dense fog disrupted air travel across North India, with major airlines warning that delays and cancellations could persist over the next few days. Major airlines, such as Air India, IndiGo and SpiceJet, issued advisories on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, cautioning passengers about possible schedule disruptions due to poor visibility caused by fog.
According to data from the Automatic Message Switching System (AMSS), general visibility in Delhi had dropped to just 100 metres by Thursday morning, while the temperature stood at 10 degrees Celsius, The Indian Express reported.
Air India announces full refunds for flights cancelled due to dense fog
In a post on X, Air India said the impact of fog would primarily be in Delhi, but the effect of the schedule alterations could cascade down to some other cities across the airline’s network.
“Over the next few days, potential dense fog conditions resulting in poor visibility may impact flight operations at our primary hub in Delhi, and a few airports in northern and eastern India, with a cascading effect in some other cities across our network,” the post read.
“Despite our efforts, if dense fog leads to sudden cancellations or prolonged delays, our ground colleagues will be available round-the-clock to assist you and make alternative arrangements,” Air India added.
As per the report, The airline stated that under its ‘FogCare’ initiative, passengers on flights expected to be affected by fog will receive advance notifications on their registered phone numbers. They will have the option to reschedule their flights at no extra cost or request a full refund without any penalty.
On Thursday, SpiceJet cautioned passengers about potential disruptions to flight operations due to bad weather and dense fog in Delhi. All departures, arrivals, and consequential flights may be impacted, advising passengers to check their flight status on its website.
“Due to bad weather (dense fog) in Delhi (DEL), all departures, arrivals, and their consequential flights may be affected. Passengers are requested to check their flight status via https://spicejet.com/#status,” the airline wrote on X.
Delhi airport issues advisory
The Delhi airport issued an advisory, alerting passengers of foggy conditions across the capital. It said the flight operations are currently under CAT III conditions, which may lead to delay or disruptions.
"We are working closely with all stakeholders to minimize inconvenience to passengers. For the latest flight status, please contact your respective airlines. We sincerely regret any inconvenience caused.," the advisory added.
