As Mumbai prepares for the pivotal 2026 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, the civic body has issued comprehensive instructions for the city’s millions of voters, detailing essential protocols for polling day, Jan 15.
The directives aim to ensure a smooth and secure voting process while strictly prohibiting activities that could disrupt the electoral process.
Valid identification is paramount The cornerstone of the voting procedure remains valid identification. While the Election Commission’s photo identity card is the primary document, officials have confirmed a list of alternative, legally acceptable proofs.
These include the Aadhaar card, passport, driving licence, PAN card and MNREGA job card. Additionally, a photo passbook, pension document with photograph, or official identity cards issued to MPs, MLAs and government staff will be accepted.
Voters are also advised to carry their official Voter Information Slip, though a copy will be available at the polling station if misplaced.
Strict prohibitions within polling station vicinity In a clear set of prohibitions, the civic body has warned that mobile phones, if brought into a polling station, must be switched off. The carrying of any flammable materials or sharp objects, such as lighters or pocket knives, is expressly forbidden.
Furthermore, the commission has urged the public not to spread or believe unverified rumours, which can cause unnecessary alarm.
Campaigning activities face severe restrictions near polling places. While candidates may conduct door-to-door greetings without distributing pamphlets on the day, all such activity is banned within a 100-metre radius of any polling station.
Accessibility and emergency provisions
Emphasising inclusivity, the BMC confirmed that all polling stations will be equipped with essential amenities. These include drinking water, ramps and wheelchairs to assist senior citizens and persons with disabilities.
Voters requiring assistance are encouraged to ask polling officials. For any emergencies on election day, the designated helpline numbers are 1916, 112, or 100.
The outcome of the BMC polls will determine the administration of the country’s financial capital for the next five years, with all parties keenly focused on a high and orderly voter turnout.
