FY26 food subsidy bill pegged at Rs 2.03 lakh crore, up 3%

The entire amount will be spent under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, which was extended by five years in November 2023

The Centre has pegged its food subsidy bill for FY26 at Rs 2.03 lakh crore, marginally higher from the revised estimate of Rs 1.97 lakh crore for the current financial year.

The outlay for food subsidy for FY26, however, is lower than the Budget estimate of Rs 2.05 lakh crore for the current fiscal.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Budget for the financial year 2025-26 on February 1.

The food subsidy bill, which is the largest component of the country’s subsidy bill, for the next fiscal is 3.04 percent more on-year than the revised estimate for FY25.
