Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV) will launch the Tata Punch facelift in India on January 13. Ahead of the launch, the company has shared details of the variants, features and colour options. The company has spread the features carefully across six variants -- Smart, Pure, Pure+, Adventure, Accomplished and Accomplished+ S. Here is what each version gets, and what kind of buyer it makes sense for.
Smart
This is the entry point, but Tata hasn't kept it basic. Six airbags are standard here, which is a big deal at this end of the market. You also get LED headlamps, ESP, Eco and City drive modes, remote keyless entry and iTPMS. If you are buying a Punch mainly for safety and daily use, and do not care too much about screens and tech, this variant covers the essentials.
Pure
The Pure variant adds comfort features that most buyers expect today. Rear AC vents come in, along with steering-mounted controls and a central armrest. You also get a rear defogger and a day-night IRVM. This trim is for buyers who want a simple, comfortable car without stretching into higher variants.
Pure+
This is where the Punch facelift starts to feel properly modern. The Pure+ gets an 8-inch HD touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. There is an HD reverse camera as well, along with cruise control, a USB Type-C fast charger and a height-adjustable driver seat. For many buyers, this could end up being the most balanced variant in the line-up.
Adventure
The Adventure variant is where Tata really piles on the tech. It gets a 360-degree camera with blind view monitor, push-button start, automatic climate control, rear wiper and washer, automatic headlamps and rain-sensing wipers. The wheels are 15-inch styled units. If you drive a lot in the city and want maximum convenience, this is the trim that starts to make sense.
Accomplished
With the Accomplished variant, the Punch steps into more premium territory. You get LED DRLs, LED taillamps and 16-inch alloy wheels. The infotainment screen grows to 10.25 inches. Seats get extended thigh support, and the climate control system switches to a touch-based setup. This variant is clearly aimed at buyers upgrading from premium hatchbacks.
Accomplished+ S
This is the fully loaded version. The Accomplished+ S adds LED fog lamps with cornering function, a voice-assisted electric sunroof, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless phone charging, auto-dimming IRVM and iRA connected car tech. If you want every feature Tata is offering on the Punch, this is it.
Colour options
The Punch facelift will be sold in six colours -- Coorg Cloud, Pristine White, Daytona Grey, Bengal Rouge, Caramel and Cyantific. Some of these shades have been borrowed from the recently launched Tata Sierra.
Powertrain expectations
Under the hood, things are expected to stay the same. The Punch facelift is likely to continue with the 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine making 88PS and 115Nm, with 5-speed manual and AMT options. The CNG version, with 73PS and 103Nm, should also carry over.
There is also an expected turbo-petrol option, likely sourced from the Tata Nexon. That would mean a 1.2-litre turbo engine with 120PS and 170Nm, paired with 6-speed manual and AMT gearboxes.
Expected price and rivals
The current Punch is priced between Rs 5.50 lakh and Rs 9.30 lakh (ex-showroom). The facelifted version is expected to sit slightly higher, roughly between Rs 5.75 lakh and Rs 10 lakh (ex-showroom). In the market, the Tata Punch facelift will go up directly against the Hyundai Exter. It will also overlap with premium hatchbacks like the Maruti Suzuki Swift on price.
