The Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate rationalisation has resulted in cars across segments and body styles becoming cheaper in India. While companies have already announced price reductions, September could be an opportune time for prospective SUV buyers, as select models have witnessed price cuts of up to Rs 10 lakh.
All internal combustion engine (ICE) cars, be it SUVs, MPVs, sedans or hatchbacks, are now either under the 18% GST slab or the 40% GST slab. There is no compensation cess anymore.
Earlier, all ICE cars attracted a GST of 28%. On top of it, there was a compensation cess in the range of 1% to 22%. This would lead to a total tax of 29% to 31% on the small cars, and 43% to 50% on the relatively larger cars and luxury models.
With only two GST slabs, 18% and 40%, now and no compensation cess, the overall tax burden on ICE cars has come down, leading to lower prices. Carmakers have also been proactive in passing the GST benefits to the buyers.
The SUV segment now accounts for almost 55% of the total car market in India. All kinds of SUVs, from the micro models to compact models, mid-size models, large models and even luxury models, have received handsome price cuts following the restructuring of the GST rates.
The new ex-showroom prices for all cars will become effective from September 22.
Tata Punch
The Tata Punch, which is the largest-selling micro-SUV in India, has received a price cut of up to Rs 85,000. At the heart of the Punch is a 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine, which generates 88PS of maximum power and 115Nm of peak torque. The transmission options include 5-speed MT and 5-speed AMT. There is also a CNG option (73PS and 103Nm) with a 5-speed MT.
Tata Nexon
The Tata Nexon prices have dropped by up to Rs 1.55 lakh. One of the largest-selling compact SUVs in India, the Nexon comes with three engine options -- 1.2-litre turbo petrol (120PS and 170Nm), 1.2-litre dual-fuel turbo petrol + CNG (100PS and 170Nm) and 1.5-litre diesel (115PS and 260Nm). The transmission choices include 5-speed MT, 6-speed MT, 6-speed AMT and DCA with the turbo petrol mill, 6-speed MT with the CNG unit, and 6-speed MT and 6-speed AMT with the diesel motor.
Hyundai Creta
The Hyundai Creta is the top-selling mid-size SUV in India. It is available in the standard Creta form and the performance-oriented Creta N Line form. The Creta price has decreased by up to Rs 72,145. The Creta N Line has become cheaper by up to Rs 71,762.
The Creta range has three engine options -- 1.5-litre MPi naturally-aspirated petrol (115PS and 144Nm), 1.5-litre Kappa Turbo GDi petrol (160PS and 253Nm) and 1.5-litre U2 CRDi diesel (116 PS and 250 Nm). The transmission options include 6-speed manual, IVT automatic, 7-speed DCT automatic and 6-speed torque converter automatic.
Mahindra Scorpio
While the Scorpio Classic price has gone down by Rs 1.01 lakh, the price of the Scorpio N has reduced by Rs 1.45 lakh.
The Scorpio Classic gets a single diesel mill -- 2.2-litre mHawk CRDi unit (132PS and 300Nm). This engine is mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox sending power to the rear wheels. The is no automatic transmission or 4WD option.
The Scorpio-N has more variety when it comes to powertrains. The SUV currently has two engine options -- 2.0-litre mStallion petrol and 2.2-litre mHawk diesel. The petrol unit delivers 203 PS and 370 Nm with 6-speed MT, and 203 PS and 380 Nm with 6-speed AT. The diesel unit is good for 175 PS and 370 Nm with 6-speed MT, and 175 PS and 400 Nm with 6-speed AT. The diesel engine also comes in a relatively less powerful guise (132 PS and 300 Nm) with 6-speed MT. The Scorpio-N is available in both 2WD and 4WD avatars.
Toyota Fortuner
The Toyota Fortuner price has come down by as much as Rs 3.49 lakh, while that of the Toyota Fortuner Legender by up to Rs 3.34 lakh.
The Fortuner has a 2.7-litre petrol engine (166PS and 245Nm) with 5-speed MT and 6-speed AT options. There is also a 2.8-litre diesel mill (204PS and 420Nm/500Nm) with 6-speed MT and 6-speed AT choices. The diesel mill can be had in a hybrid form as well, with a 6-speed AT. The Legender has the same diesel and diesel hybrid powertrain options as the Fortuner.
BMW X7
One of the most popular luxury SUVs in India, the BMW X7, has seen a price drop of Rs 9 lakh.
The X7 uses 3-litre BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol and diesel engines. The 6-cylinder in-line petrol unit is good for 381PS and 520Nm, and can push the SUV from 0-100kmph in 5.8 seconds. The 6-cylinder in-line diesel unit generates 340PS and 700Nm and can propel the car from 0-100kmph in almost the same time of 5.9 seconds. Additionally, both engines feature a 48V electrical motor with a power output of 12PS and torque output of 200Nm. They are mated to an 8-speed Steptronic transmission.
Mercecdes-Benz GLS 450d AMG Line
The Mercedes-Benz GLS 450d AMG Line has seen a price cut of Rs 10 lakh. The SUV employs a 3-litre 6-cylinder in-line diesel engine, which is produces 367PS and 750Nm, and comes mated to a 9-speed automatic torque converter.
