Be prepared — the hikes in fares for the Delhi Metro may not be the last such case. Fare revisions on public transport systems across India would now be done at regular intervals, according to experts and transport officials.
While commenting on the new Metro policy, a government official told Hindustan Times that such revisions would now be done at regular intervals and for everyone.
The policy, which was cleared by the Union Cabinet in August, allows states to draw up rules and set up a fare fixation committee (FFC) for periodic revision of fares.
The hikes are being done in an effort to make the Metro operations viable.
Currently, the FFCs that brainstorms and recommends the revised fares are temporary ones set up by the government.

The FFC for Delhi Metro fare hikes was set up in June last year and submitted its report in September recommending a staggering hike.
On May 8, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation had approved the fares to be increased in two rounds. The first hike this year was done in May 2017, when the price of minimum tickets was raised from Rs 8 to Rs 10 and maximum from Rs 30 to Rs 50.
The second hike kicked in from October 10, sparking off further political protests.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was one of vehement opponents of the ban.
In countries like London, and Singapore, the fares are revised periodically. In Delhi, the metro fares were increased last time in 2009.
