Trump-Xi talks spark Taiwan policy concerns

U.S. President Donald Trump’s revelation that he is discussing possible arms sales to Taiwan with Chinese President Xi Jinping has sparked concern in Taipei, where authorities rely on Washington’s support amid Beijing’s territorial claims.

On Monday, Trump told reporters that he is consulting Xi on the potential deals—a statement experts say could conflict with longstanding U.S. foreign policy guiding relations with self-ruled Taiwan.

“I’ve talked to him about it. We had a good conversation, and we’ll make a determination pretty soon,” Trump said when asked about Xi’s objections. He added that he maintains “a very good relationship with President Xi.”

The comments have triggered debate among analysts and politicians over whether they indicate a shift in U.S. policy toward Taiwan ahead of Trump’s planned visit to China in April.
