The United States Embassy and all US Consulates in India will remain closed for three days from Wednesday, December 24, to Friday, December 26, 2025, the US Mission India has announced. The shutdown follows a Presidential Executive Order directing the closure of US federal government departments and agencies during this period.
As a result, routine consular services, including visa interviews, passport processing, document verification, and other non-emergency operations, will be unavailable at all US diplomatic missions across India. This includes the embassy in New Delhi and consulates in Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Kolkata.
“The US Embassy and Consulates in India will be closed from Wednesday, December 24, 2025, to Friday, December 26, 2025, in accordance with the Presidential Executive Order providing for the closure of executive departments and agencies of the federal government on these dates. Routine consular services will not be available during these dates”, the embassy said in a post on X.
The announcement comes days after US President Donald Trump issued an executive order granting Christmas Eve and the day after Christmas off for most federal employees. Under the order, all executive departments and agencies of the federal government will remain closed on December 24 and December 26, with employees excused from duty.
The order also allows department heads to keep certain offices and installations operational for reasons related to national security, defence, or other public needs.
According to the notice, consular services are expected to resume on December 27, 2025, following the three-day closure.
Trump has previously granted Christmas Eve off to federal workers during his earlier terms in 2018, 2019, and 2020. President Joe Biden followed a similar practice in 2024.
Christmas is among the 11 official federal holidays in the United States, along with New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, and Labour Day.
