Thailand imposes martial law in 8 border districts amid deadly clashes with Cambodia, warns of war

Thailand imposed martial law on Friday in eight districts along its border with Cambodia, following a second consecutive day of deadly clashes between the two nations.

Thailand imposed martial law on Friday in eight districts along its border with Cambodia, following a second consecutive day of deadly clashes between the two nations.

Apichart Sapprasert, commander of the military's Border Defense Command in Chanthaburi and Trat provinces, announced in a statement that "martial law is now in effect" across seven districts in Chanthaburi and one in Trat.

Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai warned Friday that cross-border clashes with Cambodia that have uprooted more than 130,000 people "could develop into war", as the countries traded deadly strikes for a second day.

A long-running border dispute erupted into intense fighting with jets, artillery, tanks and ground troops on Thursday, and the UN Security Council is set to hold an emergency meeting on the crisis later Friday.
