Amid rising tensions between New Delhi and Islamabad, Pakistan's ambassador in Moscow has requested Russia's help to ease the situation with India after the deadly Pahalgam attack on April 22, which resulted in 26 fatalities.
In an upcoming interview with Russia's TASS news agency, Pakistan's ambassador to Moscow, Mohammad Khalid Jamali, expressed hope that Russia could mediate in the ongoing tensions, drawing on its past involvement in resolving Indo-Pak conflicts. He highlighted Russia's privileged strategic partnership with India and strong ties with Pakistan, positioning the country as a credible mediator, similar to its role during the 1966 Tashkent Agreement, when the former Soviet premier helped end the armed conflict.
The call for de-escalation comes amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed the lives of 26 people, mostly tourists.
In a phone call with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov urged both nations to ease tensions, referencing the 1972 Simla Accord and the 1999 Lahore Declaration, which advocate for resolving disputes bilaterally without third-party mediation.
