Japan’s new Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, said that she looked forward to holding “candid discussions” with US leaders ahead of President Donald Trump’s visit later this week.

In her first address as premier, Takaichi stated that she hoped to engage in discussions on regional and global issues, including the Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, Ukraine, and key bilateral matters.

Japan’s first woman prime minister also announced plans to draft an “economic package” to tackle rising prices, calling it her administration’s “priority” to help citizens cope with inflation.

Takaichi, appointed earlier on Tuesday, leads Japan’s fifth government in as many years. She faces the challenge of steering a minority administration following the collapse of her party’s previous coalition.
