After US President Donald Trump suggested that Ukraine, with support from the European Union, could reclaim all its territory from Russia and restore its original borders, Moscow responded cautiously.
Russia’s Deputy UN Ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy told reporters, “Don't get so excited about every tweet,” downplaying the significance of Trump’s statement.
Trump made the comments in a Truth Social post following his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the sidelines of the United Nations conference, stating, “I think Ukraine, with the support of the European Union, is in a position to fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form.”
Following Trump’s post and his changed stance, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told the UN Security Council that the administration was considering options in case Russia refuses a peaceful resolution. Rubio suggested that Trump’s shift in tone was part of this deliberation.
Trump has shown “extraordinary patience,” Rubio said, noting recent escalations. “We've entered a period of, what's appears to be a potential, even escalation with some historically highest number of strikes we've seen over the last few nights than before. Now, we are also watching incursions into neighboring airspace by both drones and airplanes,” he added.
“The United States remains as committed as it has ever been to a peaceful resolution to this dangerous conflict, but there will come a moment in which we will have to conclude that perhaps there is no interest in a peaceful resolution, and then the president has before him real options, which he intends to pursue, as he has made clear today in some of the messages he has put out.”
Trump further emphasized, “With time, patience, and the financial support of Europe and, in particular, NATO, the original Borders from where this War started, is very much an option.”
Dismissing Russia as a “paper tiger” facing economic challenges, he added that Ukraine could “take back their country in its original form and, who knows, maybe even go further than that!”
Commenting on Russia’s military efforts, Trump said, “Russia has been fighting aimlessly for three and a half years a war that should have taken a real military power less than a week to win. This is not distinguishing Russia. In fact, it is very much making them look like ‘a paper tiger.’”
