Without naming US President Donald Trump, California Governor Gavin Newsom issued a stark warning about the future of democracy in the United States, saying he fears there may not be a presidential election in 2028 unless the nation addresses current political threats.

"I fear that we will not have an election in 2028. I really mean that in the core of my soul, unless we wake up to the code red of what's happening in this country," he said in an interview.

Newsom has repreatedly issued several stark warnings that President Trump may seek a third term or even try to cancel the 2028 presidential election to stay in power, which Newsom characterizes as “authoritarian” behavior. Newsom has expressed fear that Trump’s administration is taking concrete steps to undermine democracy, using examples such as federal troops being sent to Los Angeles and the expansion of ICE as a private enforcement force.

“I don’t think Donald Trump wants another election,” he said earlier, citing the “Trump 2028” hats sent to him by Trump’s supporters and gestures Trump made comparing himself to Franklin D. Roosevelt, the only president to serve more than two terms.

Trump deployed the National Guard to Los Angeles in June, citing local failure to control anti-ICE protests, which Newsom declared illegal and unconstitutional. Newsom responded by filing a high-profile lawsuit challenging the federalization of California's National Guard, which resulted in court decisions that temporarily blocked Trump's actions. The legal process heightened tensions and kept the public focused on the feud.
