Canada has lost its measles elimination status after nearly three decades. That's according to the Pan American Health Organization, which said on Monday the loss of elimination status was due to its failure to curb a year-long outbreak.

Health experts have predicted the agency would strip Canada of the elimination status after it recorded more than 5,000 measles cases in the country.

Canada's loss of elimination status also resulted in the Americas region losing the status.
