A deadly shooting at a high-rise office building in Midtown Manhattan on Monday evening left at least five people dead, including an off-duty New York City police officer and the suspected gunman, authorities said.
The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Nevada, fatally shot himself after opening fire inside the Park Avenue skyscraper that houses several prominent financial firms and the National Football League’s headquarters.
A concealed carry permit from Las Vegas was found on his body, according to law enforcement sources.
The Fire Department of New York responded to emergency calls at approximately 6:30 pm, reporting multiple victims at the scene.
Mayor Eric Adams confirmed “multiple injuries” and urged those still inside the building to shelter in place as NYPD officers swept each floor. He later said he was headed to meet the families of those affected.
Authorities have not publicly released a motive, and an investigation is underway.
Police sources cited by Reuters stated that in addition to the deceased officer and suspect, two civilians were also struck by gunfire, though the extent of their injuries is unclear.
As per initial reports, Tamura entered the building heavily armed, wearing a bullet-resistant vest and carrying an AR-style rifle. He reportedly fired shots on the first floor before barricading himself on the 32nd floor. The situation was eventually contained, and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Disch later confirmed that the "lone shooter has been neutralised."
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as employees fled the building.
Jessica Chen, who was attending a presentation on the second floor, said she heard a rapid series of gunshots and took shelter in a conference room with others, barricading the door with tables. “We were really, really scared,” she has been cited by ABC News.
Footage from local media shows dozens of people evacuating the building with their hands raised. Nearby workers described moments of confusion and panic as word of the shooting spread.
Federal agents from the FBI’s New York field office also responded to the scene to assist local law enforcement. The city’s emergency management system issued alerts warning of traffic disruptions, road closures, and transit delays in the area.
The tower at 345 Park Avenue is home to financial giants, including Blackstone, KPMG, and Deutsche Bank, along with the NFL’s main offices.
