US President Donald Trump distanced himself from Israel’s strike in Doha, Qatar, saying Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made the decision.
While condemning the strike, Trump insisted the responsibility lay entirely with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, stressing that the US administration had no role.
"This morning, the Trump Administration was notified by the United States Military that Israel was attacking Hamas which, very unfortunately, was located in a section of Doha, the Capital of Qatar. This was a decision made by Prime Minister Netanyahu, it was not a decision made by me," Trump posted on his Truth Social.
He argued the attack would harm the interests of both Israel and the United States. Trump added that he had immediately directed special envoy Steve Witkoff to notify the Qataris about the strike, though it was “too late” to stop it.
“Unilaterally bombing inside Qatar, a Sovereign Nation and close Ally of the United States, that is working very hard and bravely taking risks with us to broker Peace, does not advance Israel or America’s goals," Trump added.
Speaking to reporters as he made a rare outing onto Washington's streets on Tuesday, Trump said, "I'm just, I'm not thrilled about the whole situation. We want the hostages back, but we are not thrilled about the way that went down today."
A day earlier, Trump had denounced the attack in a Truth Social post, describing it as an “unfortunate incident” and criticising the choice of location. Emphasising Qatar’s role as a close US partner, he said he had assured its leadership that no such strike would occur on their territory again.
At a briefing the same day, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt voiced a similar stance. She noted that targeting Qatar, an important Washington ally, “does not advance Israel or America’s goals,” according to AFP.
