Uttar Pradesh has launched a first-of-its-kind farm stay initiative designed to transform villages into cultural hubs and promote agri-tourism in the state. By inviting investors to develop farm stay accommodations, the scheme offers tourists the chance to experience authentic rural life—right from milking cows and harvesting crops to enjoying traditional meals with farming families.
A Step Towards Agri-Tourism Leadership
For the first time, the Directorate of Tourism in Uttar Pradesh has opened proposals for developing farm stays across the state. Unlike conventional homestays, these farm stays must be built on or near working farms, featuring at least two lettable rooms, a reception area, and immersive rural activities such as:
1. Agri-farming and horticulture
2. Dairy farming and animal husbandry
3. Fishpond experiences
4. Guided farm tours
This approach blends modern hospitality with traditional farming culture, creating a unique tourism model that connects visitors with village life.
Strong Financial Incentives for Investors
To attract entrepreneurs and investors, the government has rolled out a comprehensive financial package, including:
- Capital subsidies up to 25% for projects worth Rs 10 lakh to Rs 10 crore
- An additional 5% subsidy for women entrepreneurs, SC/ST/Backward Class investors, and projects in priority destinations
- 100% exemption on stamp duty, land conversion charges, and development fees
- Interest subsidies on loans for eligible projects
- Employment subsidies for units hiring 50+ locals, including special support for differently-abled-friendly units
These incentives make farm stays not only a cultural project but also a profitable business opportunity.
Boosting Rural Jobs and Local Economies
Tourism Minister Jaiveer Singh hailed the farm stay initiative as a “game-changer for rural tourism,” stressing that it is not just about creating farm accommodations but about “turning our villages into vibrant centers of culture, livelihood, and learning.” The programme supports the state’s larger vision of promoting rural tourism by giving visitors a chance to experience authentic farm life and warm village hospitality. With the growing demand for meaningful, off-the-beaten-path travel, Uttar Pradesh is well-positioned to offer tourists a unique and immersive journey into the heart of rural India.
By linking tourism with agriculture, the initiative will:
- Generate employment in villages through hospitality and allied services
- Diversify farmer incomes by converting farms into tourism destinations
- Support local crafts, cuisine, and cultural heritage
- Promote eco-tourism and sustainable rural practices
The government will even reimburse employers’ EPF contributions for up to five years and provide additional monthly subsidies for employing differently-abled workers.
Why Tourists Will Love It
Uttar Pradesh, which welcomed 65 crore tourist visits in 2024, is already among India’s most popular travel destinations. With the launch of the farm stay programme, the state is taking a major step toward diversifying its tourism offerings by moving beyond monuments and heritage sites to include immersive rural experiences. This initiative complements the existing network of homestays and bed-and-breakfasts while introducing visitors to the simplicity and warmth of village life.
By allowing tourists to engage in farming activities, enjoy traditional meals, and connect with rural communities, the programme promises to attract more domestic and international travelers, strengthening Uttar Pradesh’s position as India’s leading hub for rural tourism.
Towards a Sustainable Tourism Model
The farm stay programme aligns with the state’s larger goal of building a sustainable tourism ecosystem. By focusing on authentic experiences, cultural preservation, and eco-friendly practices, the initiative promises benefits for both travelers and local communities.
A Fresh Boost to Agri-Tourism in Uttar Pradesh
The Uttar Pradesh farm stay initiative marks the beginning of a new chapter in Indian tourism. With strong financial backing, community support, and a focus on authenticity, the state is on track to become India’s agri-tourism capital.
For travelers seeking meaningful, off-the-beaten-path journeys, and for farmers and entrepreneurs looking to diversify income, this initiative offers a win-win opportunity that blends agriculture, culture, and hospitality like never before.
