Kaas Plateau: Maharashtra’s Blooming Paradise of Wildflowers

High up in the Sahyadri range, about 25 kilometres from Satara in Maharashtra, lies a natural wonder that feels almost otherworldly—the Kaas Plateau, also known as the Valley of Flowers of the West. Every year between August and October, this UNESCO World Natural Heritage site transforms into a vibrant carpet of colours as over 850 species of wildflowers bloom in unison.

The plateau sits at an altitude of about 1,200 meters and is surrounded by serene lakes, grasslands, and forests that support a rich ecosystem of butterflies, birds, and insects. It’s a hotspot for biodiversity, drawing botanists, photographers, and nature lovers from across the world. The nearby Kaas Lake, built over 100 years ago, adds another layer of calm to the landscape and makes for a perfect picnic or quiet stroll.
