Meta-owned instant messaging app WhatsApp is working on a feature that’ll bring Google Translate directly to chats, as per a report by WABetaInfo. The feature is currently being tested under the name of ‘Translate message’ in WhatsApp’s beta for Android 2.24.15.8 update.

WhatsApp’s ‘Translate message’ is based on Google’s live translation, which can be used to translate messages directly on the user’s device. WhatsApp will reportedly use language packs to translate the messages.

Since translation into another language happens locally i.e. only on the WhatsApp user’s device, it is safe to assume that the translated text will not be picked by an external server. Ergo, it’s a win for privacy-focussed individuals.

For translation, WhatsApp plans to give the users language packs to install on their devices. Users can install these language packs and then they’ll be able to translate WhatsApp messages directly in the chat.
