Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has shared a grounded and hopeful view of the future of artificial intelligence at a recent fireside chat with tech interviewer Matthias Dopfer. In a moment that summed up the mood of the conversation, Nadella was asked if we might one day see companies that are fully created and run by AI with no humans involved. He laughed gently and said it was too far fetched for him. The answer set the tone for the rest of the discussion.

Nadella is not someone who dismisses AI. He is leading Microsoft through one of the biggest technology shifts in decades. But he does not buy into the idea that AI will lead to a world where people become unnecessary. He used the example of the new generation of data centers that run mostly on their own once they are up and running. These facilities often operate quietly in the dark, with machines doing their work around the clock. But Nadella pointed out that before the lights go off, humans spend years designing, building and fine tuning every part of these systems.

Looking ahead, Nadella believes the next five to ten years will bring remarkable progress in automation. AI will take over many time consuming tasks and handle them faster than any person could. But he does not think this means jobs will disappear. Instead, the nature of work will shift. People will rely on AI more like a powerful assistant rather than a replacement. He described a future where workers give broad instructions to a group of AI tools at the start of the day. These tools complete most of the work and return with questions only when they reach a roadblock.

This idea of guiding AI instead of being replaced by it is something Nadella calls macro delegation and micro steering. You let the AI handle the basics while you use your judgement to shape the final result. In his view, this combination will raise productivity and free people from endless routine work. It will also make space for more creative and strategic thinking.
