If you have ever tried updating the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar, you probably know how tiring the current process can be. You have to visit an Aadhaar enrolment centre, wait in line, fill out forms and complete verification. For many people, especially the elderly or those in remote locations, this becomes a real hassle.
Now, UIDAI, the agency that manages Aadhaar, wants to change that completely. Very soon, you will be able to update your Aadhaar-linked mobile number right from home using the Aadhaar App on your phone.
Why this matters
Your mobile number linked to Aadhaar is used everywhere. You need it to receive OTPs for banking, UPI, government services, PAN linking and more. If the number becomes inactive or gets lost, you usually cannot access many essential services. That is why keeping it up to date is important.
But going to a centre every time you change your number is not convenient. UIDAI knows this, so it is introducing a home-based update process using digital verification.
How the new system will work
UIDAI plans to use a two-step check to ensure the process stays secure:
OTP verification:
When you try to update your number, you will receive a one-time password either on your existing Aadhaar-linked number or the new number you want to add. Entering this OTP is the first confirmation that you are the actual owner of the number.
Face authentication:
After OTP verification, the Aadhaar App will ask you to scan your face using your phone’s front camera. The app will match your face with the photograph stored in the Aadhaar database. If it matches, the number will be updated.
Since both steps require only your phone, there is no need for physical documents or a visit to an Aadhaar centre.

The feature is not live yet. UIDAI has only announced that it is “coming soon.” Once launched, the update process will appear inside the Aadhaar App. Users will need stable internet and a smartphone with a camera.
In simple terms, this is Aadhaar becoming more user friendly. The idea is to let people manage important updates from the comfort of home while keeping the system secure through OTP checks and face authentication.
