For gamers eagerly awaiting Sony’s next-generation console, the wait may be longer, as fresh reports have suggested that Sony is re-evaluating its production plans for the purported PlayStation 6 (PS6) amid global component shortages, which could delay its launch. Moreover, the existing PS5 console may also get costlier, with rising component costs and global supply pressures forcing the company to rethink its plans.

Previous reports and rumours suggested that the Sony PS6 was supposed to make a debut in the Indian as well as the global market around late 2027, like the company’s usual next-generation console release timeline. However, due to the current global shortage of Random Access Memory (RAM), which has been driven largely by the rapid expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI), we have seen a steep rise in RAM prices, which industry insiders warn that this could rise even further in the coming years.
Memory components are a critical part of modern consoles, and securing enough supply at a sustainable cost is becoming more challenging for every manufacturer. Therefore, many tipsters now claim that Sony is reconsidering the time for launch of the PS6 console due to uncertainty in the supply chain. The current shortage has already forced smartphone and laptop manufacturers to raise prices or reduce configurations, with Sony also facing a similar dilemma with its next console. It's not clear whether Microsoft will also look at hiking the prices of Xbox consoles.
Moreover, this shortage could also increase this console’s price worldwide, making the upcoming PS6 a tough choice for price-sensitive gamers. Recently, the PlayStation 5 received a price hike, and reports suggest that it could get pricier next year. However, some leaks also claim that the company will track these developments for another year and plans to ship the PS6 system by the end of 2027 or early 2028.
