Popular online gaming platform, Roblox, has introduced mandatory age verification for users in India to enable chat features. The company is now rolling out the requirement globally to other countries as well, after testing it in a few markets last month.

To complete the age-check process, Roblox users need to allow access to their camera and follow a series of on-screen instructions for facial verification, which is estimated through the company’s AI system. In November last year, this age verification system was rolled out in a phased manner in Australia, New Zealand and the Netherlands. The company says more than 50% of daily active users have completed this age verification process, with phased roll-out now beginning in the United States of America, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Brazil, Korea, Japan, Indonesia and India.

Once Roblox users complete an age check, they are assigned to one of six age groups: under 9, 9–12, 13–15, 16–17, 18–20, and 21 plus. By default, users in each age group will be able to chat with users in the groups directly above and below theirs. Roblox says that chat is turned off by default for children under age 9, unless they obtain consent from a parent to enable chat after the age check process.
